Paper Heartbeats is a series of EKGs generated from the punctuation of novels using Python. To take the heartbeat of a novel I assign each punctuation mark a unique stroke.
The EKG is read left to right. The length of the lines between the “heartbeats” indicates the number of words between the punctuation marks within the text. The punctuation themselves are marked by their corresponding heartbeat strokes. The EKG flatlines as the novel and the flow of punctuation ends.
All of the texts in this project are in the public domain, and are sourced from Project Gutenberg.
Prints of the heartbeats are going to be available to order soon. If you would like to be notified when the shop goes live please sign up below.
